As our youngest son began Scouting we camped more often and usually "Headquarters" to from 8 - 15 hungry Scouts. The most fun we'd ever had! About 10 years ago, I retired and when our youngest went off to college, my wife retired, we sold the business and took our older 1992 Alpenlite 25' 5W; it was two days after the infamous 9-11. We'd thought we'd be flying to Minnesota to see a daughter and her children, instead, since noone was flying, we chose to think about our fortunate lives, living in America and what it meant to us. We'd thought we'd be full timers if we liked this next trip. Suddenly this was it. We roamed around without any particular direction, then chose to go to Minn. and after a week, we started south as it was getting chilly. Another trailer and 4 years later we were still on the road, supporting a house we hadn't lived in for several years. I think we were "Full Timers" better sell the anchor and do something else. After being in Del Rio, TX, Quartzsite, AZ, Prescott, AZ, and other so called snow bird places we returned to Texas, to the gulf coast. We've been here, more or less, ever since. Now we just travel all summer, northward. Hurry home in September. The "Winter Texans" have it almost right, only they tie themselves to an anchorage during the months they should be travelling. But we are glad, the highways are awful crowded as it is and the campgrounds are always full. We compromised and now spend part of the summer as Camp Hosts trading a few hours work for a full hook up site. Usually in a beautiful state park somewhere. Or, a US Forest Service CG, or a State Forest in the Pac NW. 2008, a new State Park in Oregon ! Fortunately have three grandchildren not too far away, too far for quickie Baby Sitting though.

http://www.texasrv.com/ & http://www.texasoutside.com/

Exploring Tyler & Lake Palestine - February 2007

We decided to head east for a change and explore Tyler and Lake Palestine. On the way though Tyler we had dinner at Mercados which was recommended by a couple different people, Good margarita and ok traditional Mexican fare. We spent Thursday and Friday night in one of the lodge rooms at Lake Palestine Campground and Lodge. Lake Palestine Campground sits on 10 acres on a peninsula in a cove of Lake Palestine. They have RV sites, one tent site and a variety of lodge rooms. We had a room that overlooked the cove and was 10 feet from the water. Lake Palestine Campground is a good spot to stay because it is centrally located for exploring Lake Palestine, an easy 10 minute drive to Tyler, or 15 minutes south to Palestine. You can read our review of Lake Palestine Campground and Lodge by clicking here. Following a good breakfast in the Lake Palestine Campground cafe, we headed to Tyler to play "The Traveling Texas Tourist". The first stop was the Tyler visitors bureau to pick up all the standard tourist information and to make sure that we didn't miss any of the Tyler attractions and things to do. Right across the street from the visitors bureau is the Discovery Science Place. This is an excellent place to spent some time with your kids - they have three hands-on exhibit halls where kids are free to move around and explore, plus hands on learning centers, a subterranean display, and an interesting traveling exhibit from San Francisco. Kids from 5 to 12 should really enjoy a few hours here.

Texas A&M Chilifest and Pecan Lakes Golf Course - March 2006

If you like bar hopping with a lot of Aggies, some really good country music, and enjoy hanging out with 30,000 rather inebriated A&M and other college students than College Station and the Texas A&M Chilifest is where you need to be next year. We tried to beat the Friday traffic out of Dallas with no luck (I don’t think you can ever beat the traffic out of Dallas) as we headed down to College Station for dinner at the Chicken Oil Company. Chicken Oil Company opened as a gas station and burger stop in 1977 and its truly unique atmosphere speaks for itself. It is known for its death burger, great chicken fried steak sandwiches on Texas toast, Texas toothpicks (battered onions & jalapenos), and Tijuana fries. We rate it a 3.5 out of 5 stars. After dinner we stopped by La Bodega for their watermelon martinis. It’s a tiny little taco bar but they had a live band and they’re within walking distance to our final watering holes at Northgate. Northgate is a strip of bars, restaurants, bookstores and is a Texas A&M tradition “where friends are as plentiful as beer, where dominoes and pool are considered a REAL sport, where classic country music never dies, and where carving your name in the tables and walls is expected." The first stop was the Dixie Chicken, which is where every Aggie goes to dunk their ring, play pool or dominoes, and have a good time. It is filled with down home people, has a great back porch, a very laid back atmosphere, and is a true Texas A&M staple.
